When to go
- The Chocolate Hills turn chocolate-brown in the dry season. Wikipedia: Chocolate Hills
- Cooler air arrives November–February; May is usually the hottest month. Wikipedia
- Most typhoons hit between July and November, but they can happen any time. Boats and flights are cancelled in bad weather, so leave buffer days and follow PAGASA. State Dept
Getting there from the US
- From the US, fly into Manila (NAIA) or Mactan–Cebu (CEB). Philippine Airlines is the flag carrier; check PAL for current US routes. Wikipedia: Mactan–Cebu airport
- By air: Bohol–Panglao International Airport (opened 2018) is on Panglao Island and is less than an hour's flight from Mactan–Cebu. Wikipedia: Bohol–Panglao airport
- By ferry from Cebu: fast ferries run between Cebu City and Tagbilaran port. Check OceanJet for schedules. Klook also sells ferry tickets. Klook: Bohol
Where to stay
- Alona Beach, Panglao: a 1 km beach less than two miles from the airport, near a reef popular for diving and snorkeling. Wikipedia: Alona Beach
- Elsewhere on Panglao: quieter beaches outside Alona.
- Tagbilaran City: handy for the ferry port and errands.
- Loboc / countryside: riverside stays near the Loboc River for a slower pace.
Rough budget
- We don't list hotel or flight prices because they change constantly. Price your trip with live searches, and treat any figures here as approximate.
- Attractions such as the Chocolate Hills complex and tarsier sanctuaries charge entrance fees that change; your tour operator can confirm current rates.
- ATMs take most US debit cards, but fees can exceed $5 per withdrawal and limits can be low; smaller shops and taxis usually want cash. Carry pesos before heading to islands. State Dept
Tips
- SIM cards must be registered, so the State Dept suggests a travel eSIM before you leave the US. State Dept · eSIM option: Airalo Philippines eSIM
- Countryside tours usually combine the Chocolate Hills, tarsiers and Loboc River in one day; hiring a driver for the day is common.
- If you fly into Cebu, the ferry can be simpler than a connecting flight. Leave a buffer for weather cancellations.
