Stopping over in Japan on the way to Manila or Southeast Asia
Every fact links to its source. Schedules, fees and prices change, so confirm with the linked operator or official site before you book. Last checked: Oct 17, 2026.
Why Japan works as a stopover
- Many one-stop itineraries from the US to Manila, Cebu and the rest of Southeast Asia connect in Tokyo. Instead of a short connection, you can book a stay of a few days and break up the long trip.
- Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways fly Tokyo (Haneda and Narita) to Manila; Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and others also fly Japan–Manila. Wikipedia: NAIA airlines
- For Cebu, United, Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific list Tokyo Narita–Cebu flights. Wikipedia: Mactan–Cebu airport
Entry and visa rules for US citizens
- Visa: US citizens don't need a visa for tourist or business stays up to 90 days. You can't work, and you can't change to another visa while in Japan. State Dept
- Passport: must be valid for your entire stay, with 1 blank page per entry stamp. Airlines in Japan may not let you board your next flight if your passport has less than 6 months of validity, which matters for Manila (the Philippines requires 6 months). State Dept
- Onward ticket: you should have proof of a return or onward ticket, and may be asked how you will support yourself. All visitors are fingerprinted and photographed on arrival. State Dept
- Arrival procedures: you can complete arrival procedures ahead of time on Visit Japan Web. Visit Japan Web (official)
- Medications: some common US prescriptions, including Adderall, are illegal in Japan, and marijuana and some CBD are banned. Check before you pack. State Dept
- Carry your passport: visitors must carry their passport at all times. State Dept

How to book a stopover
- Search a multi-city trip (for example, US to Tokyo, then Tokyo to Manila a few days later) rather than a round trip. Compare the price with a regular one-stop itinerary.
- Search: Google Flights (choose Multi-city) · Aviasales to Tokyo · Aviasales Tokyo to Manila
- Haneda (HND) is closer to central Tokyo than Narita (NRT). If your onward flight leaves from the other airport, leave plenty of transfer time.
- If you check bags through on separate tickets, you will need to collect them and re-check them, so allow a long buffer.
When to go
- Spring cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn foliage (October–November) are popular and busy. Klook Japan
- June–July is generally the rainy season on Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Wikipedia: Climate of Japan
- Typhoons typically occur from summer to fall, and earthquakes are common. Enroll in STEP. State Dept · STEP
Short-stopover ideas
- Tokyo: Asakusa, Shibuya and Ginza are easy to reach from Haneda. Wikipedia: Tokyo
- Osaka: some itineraries route via Osaka Kansai, which also has flights to Manila and Cebu; Dotonbori is the classic food street. Wikipedia: Osaka

Money, data and getting around
- ATMs that accept US bank cards are widely available, and most businesses take credit cards, but some places are cash only. State Dept
- Tap water is generally safe to drink. State Dept
- Buy a travel eSIM before you fly so you have data on landing. eSIM option: Airalo Japan eSIM (check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible).
